About Us – Track Records

Prominent among our Track Records are:

The Civil Society Movement in Sierra Leone (CSM-SL) played a crucial role in assisting war victims and addressing their concerns. On January 11, 1999, CSM-SL designated the National Stadium as a temporary camp for over 40,000 displaced persons, providing humanitarian aid and support. The organization facilitated the National Consultative conference, leading to the signing of the Lomé Peace Accord on July 7, 1999, and organized successful campaigns, including a stay-at-home campaign on July 17, 1999, to demonstrate the people’s opposition to intimidation during the peace talks.

In May 2000, CSM-SL worked with members of parliament to establish a joint Parliamentary/Civil Society Movement Consultative Forum, paving the way for a significant demonstration on May 8, 2000, resulting in the arrest of the RUF Leader. The organization also organized a nationwide rally in November 2000, addressing national security and showing solidarity with British Troops in Sierra Leone. CSM-SL participated in various international conferences and events, including the Ghana presidential and parliamentary elections in December 2000 and the First Pan-African Capacity Summit in Mali in 2000.

The organization played a key role in the Third Annual General Meeting of the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) in January 2001 and attended international conferences in the United States and Ethiopia in 2001. In October 2001, CSM-SL hosted the first Mano River Union civil society conference, leading to the establishment of the Mano River Union Civil Society Movement. The organization also conducted workshops on conflict management with the support of UNDP and UNDESSD.

During the National Election in May 2002, CSM-SL trained and deployed 115 members to observe the voter registration process and played a pivotal role in forming the National Election Watch (NEW), which fielded 428 observers nationwide. Additionally, CSM-SL formed part of the Mano River Union Observation team to observe the 2002 Presidential and Parliamentary elections in Sierra Leone.
